I stopped the car and just stood there. The road runs straight out of the mist, white lines blinking in the low light, and this one enormous tree holds the whole left side of the world like it's been waiting for me. The field behind it is gold. Not yellow. Gold. The kind that only happens for about eleven minutes when the sun is exactly where it is now. Fog lies in the distance, soft as breath on a window, and the trees along the horizon are only suggestions. I've driven this road a hundred times in my head. Always alone. Always slow. There's a lamp post near the tree, and a fence post, and nothing else that admits to being awake. The grass moves a little. The mist doesn't. I like places that don't perform. They just let you be quiet in them. My boots were wet by the time I got back to the car. I didn't care. Some mornings keep a piece of you. This one took a breath of mine. I'd give it back. I'd stand there again. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe not. #countryroad #mist #goldenhour #quiet
