Someone upstairs looked at this field, pointed at one tree, and said, you. You get the spotlight. Everybody else, stay in the dark.
I've been that tree. Or maybe you have. The one person in the group photo who's somehow backlit perfectly while everyone else looks like they're hiding a secret. The tree isn't even doing anything special. It's just standing there, and the light found it anyway.
Look at the sky. It's a whole storm up there, layers of grey and black like a bad mood that hasn't decided what it's angry about. And in the middle of all that, one clean beam lands on one green blob of leaves. The rest of the field gets nothing. Not a drop.
The tree's shadow stretches out behind it like it's being introduced on stage.
I tried to get the same treatment at a family reunion once. Stood in the good light for forty minutes. My uncle photobombed it with a plate of potato salad. No spotlight. No shadow. Just potato salad.
It's not fair. Nothing about it is fair. But here we are. Some trees get everything. Respect the tree. #tree #storm #field #spotlight
