I've crossed borders for less than a good macaron. Three of them here, stacked like a little pastry tower on a plain wooden board, and the colors go from pale cream to caramel to deep chocolate brown. Each one has that smooth domed top and the ruffled little skirt at the bottom, and you can see the filling peeking out the side, thick and creamy. The light is warm and low, straight out of a bakery window in a town where nobody's in a hurry. I once walked eleven blocks in the rain for a macaron. Eleven. The shop was closed. I ate a grocery store croissant and called it character building. This stack would fix that day. Some trips are measured in miles. The best ones are measured in bites. Take the detour. Find the bakery. The background is a soft blur of honey and green, so the cookies sit in their own little spotlight. The wood grain runs under them, warm and plain. The top one has a tiny crack across the dome, which in macaron language means perfection. Get there early. They go fast. #macarons #pastrylover #foodtravel #sweet
