There's a beach I go to where the stones are all gray and round like somebody rolled them by hand for years. Worn down by ten thousand winters of polite waves. Smooth is an understatement. They feel like worry stones, warm from the sun, each one the size of a thumb. Perfect for pockets. Bad for laundry. In October the light goes amber early and the whole shore turns the color of tea with too much milk. I bring a thermos. I sit. I pick one up, put it down, pick up another. Nobody rushes you on a beach like that. The water sorts the stones gently, back and forth, like it's tucking them in. A gray stone, a gray stone, a pale one. That's the collection. That's the whole afternoon. It costs nothing and it fixes everything. Go find your gray beach. Bring the thermos. #pebblebeach #october #coastal
