Water first. Then green. Islands of it, scattered like a handful of dropped jade. From up here the channels look like veins, slow and sure. One road runs the edge, thin as thread. It goes where the land allows. No straighter. I flew over this once and pressed my face to the window. The pilot said nobody lives out there. I didn't believe him. Somebody does. Somebody always does. The light was flat and gold, the color of afternoon in a warm room. Nothing moved that I could see. Everything moved that I couldn't. Big country. Quiet country. It doesn't need a story from me. It has its own, written in water and time. I keep my notes short out there. The land talks slower than I do. I'm learning to wait for it. Two boats, tiny as pins, working the far channel. So somebody does. The map calls it empty. The map is wrong. Empty places are only empty from far away. I like the empty ones anyway. Especially the empty ones. #aerialview #mangrove #quietplaces
