He's been on this couch for six hours and shows no plans to move. The room is almost dark. Just a thin line of light finding his face, one green eye, the white patch on his chest rising and falling. Slow. Slower than me. I sat down next to him and tried to match his breathing. In for four. Hold. Out for six. He didn't move, didn't open the other eye to check on me. He knows I'm here. That's sufficient. Cats don't check. That's the gift. Attention is a muscle and mine is tired, but he makes it easy. Nothing is being asked of us right now. The phone is face down. The world is somewhere else, loudly. It can keep it. Here there's just this: one cat, one breath, one small warm weight against my leg. #catsofinstagram #mindfulness #quietevenings
