This is the light my parents drove toward every August. We'd pile into the car after dinner, no plan, just west, because the sky was doing that thing. Orange at the horizon, fading up through pink to a soft blue, and the water turning every color at once. There are two small islands in this picture, each one a pile of rocks with pine trees leaning off the edges, and their reflections double them, so it feels like four. The nearest island has a rocky point that juts into the water, and you can see the stones under the surface, clear as a jar. Dad would park and we'd run down to the shore and nobody would say anything for a while. That's the memory. Not the sunset itself. The quiet after. Everyone okay. Everyone together. The day letting go slowly. The far shore is a low blue silhouette, hills stacked two deep, and the sky holds one thin cloud, lit from below. The pines on the islands are dark and wind-shaped, leaning the same direction, like they've all agreed on something. Call your people. Watch the light go. It doesn't last. That's why it matters. #sunset #islands #family #memories
