He's curled into a comma, paws over his nose, breathing so slow I have to lean in to be sure. There. There it is. The stripes on his back go on and on like ripples on a pond that's never been disturbed. Around him the room hums its small sounds. A pipe ticking. Somewhere a clock. I sit on the edge of the bed and let my shoulders drop. In through the nose, out through the mouth. He doesn't stir. Cats are good at this. They don't reheat old arguments at midnight. They don't make lists of everything they forgot. They just sleep, completely, like it's the one job they were given. Maybe it is. Maybe it's mine too, and I keep forgetting. Not tonight. So I breathe. He sleeps. The light goes soft at the window. #catnap #mindfulness #quietmoments
