Neon doesn't need a city. Proof: this cluster of cuckooflowers, glowing pink-white against a background gone almost midnight blue and green, like a sign somebody lit up in the middle of a dark field. I shot this on an overcast evening when the light had that flat, swallowed quality, and instead of fighting it I let the shadows take everything except the flowers. What's left is pure glow. The petals look backlit from inside, the unopened buds at the center dark-tipped like they've been dipped in ink, and the whole cluster reads like a neon sign for a shop that sells spring. I think that's why I like moody flower shots better than the sunny ones. Sunlight on blossoms is a postcard; blossoms burning against the dark is a story. It's the difference between a smile in good lighting and a smile in a doorway at night — one you photograph, the other you remember. The grass behind is just ghosts of green, blurred into suggestion. The flowers don't seem to mind the dark. They open anyway. That's the whole trick of early spring, and honestly, of most worthwhile things.
