Every good journey has a moment where the itinerary quietly combusts, and mine happened at a garden gate I hadn't planned to open. The guidebook said twenty minutes here, a photo, move on. Then I found her — pink hair going every direction like the wind had opinions, white hat with a green band, holding some small blue thing cupped in both hands like it might hatch. Behind her, the garden went on deeper than the map promised, all layered greens and white blossoms drifting at the edges of the light. Twenty minutes became two hours. That's travel for you. The best stops don't announce themselves; they just smile at you with the sun behind them and suddenly your schedule is a suggestion. I watched her laugh at whatever she was holding — a tiny bird, maybe, or just a good thought — and I thought about how the whole point of going somewhere new is to be caught off guard exactly like this. The flowers got their portrait taken. So did the path, the light, the leaves. But the frame I kept was the one where nothing was planned and everything was in it.
