You can photograph flowers at noon or you can wait for dark, but I like the noon version because of what the blue is doing behind them. Here's the thing that never stops being strange: that blue is the same sky that holds the stars. Same dome, same depth, just lit from the front. During the day the atmosphere scatters sunlight everywhere and the black machinery of night gets painted over. These blossoms — double cherries, each one a small pale firework shell that never got launched — hang against that blue like they're floating in it. When I shoot the night sky I wait for clarity like this and curse every cloud. When I shoot flowers I pray for the same conditions and get to sleep at a normal hour instead of 3 a.m. Fair trade. There's one copper-colored leaf in the frame, orange against all that blue and pink, and it pulls the eye the way a bright star anchors a constellation chart. If I drew lines between the blossom clusters, this could be a spring sky map. Amateur cataloging, I know. But the sky's the same show either way. It just changes costume.
