There are places you reach by plane and places you reach by bending down. This is the second kind. I was walking back from the market, no camera plan, no route, when this leaf caught the light and stopped me mid-step. So I leaned in. And suddenly I was an explorer again, mapping a country about the size of my palm. The veins run like river systems on some map of a place nobody has named, branching and forking and thinning until the lines disappear into red. The sun comes through from behind and the whole thing glows like stained glass in a church nobody built. I travel a lot, and here's the thing nobody admits: half the best discoveries happen within ten feet of the path you were already on. You just have to stop. Crouch. Get your knees dirty. The locals — in this case, ants — were unimpressed with me. One crossed the midrib like it was a highway overpass and kept going. I took the shot and stood up and the world was regular-sized again. But for about four minutes I'd been somewhere very far away, and I didn't even need a passport.
