Raspberries are a commitment. Look at them, all clustered and blushing, each one a little cup of drupelets holding together by hope and ambition. I once bought two punnets for a tart and ate them all standing over the sink like a raccoon. No regrets. They smell like summer, tart and sweet at the same time, that specific perfume that hits the back of your nose and says garden. The light catches the fuzz on them, tiny hairs, and every berry has its own little personality. One's shy. One's bursting. One is clearly the leader. When you bite one it gives all at once, then the seeds tickle, then it's gone and you're reaching for the next before you've swallowed. They don't keep. That's the tragedy. Buy them, eat them the same hour. The best things are like that. Also don't wash them until you're ready. Water is their enemy. I learned that the hard way, soggy and sad. My baker swirls them into scones warm from the oven, and the juice makes little red pockets you can see from the street. Wait in line for that. Bring cash. #raspberries #berries #foodphotography #summer
