There's a specific temperature a wooden floor reaches in the late afternoon, when the sun has been working the boards for hours, and this fox girl has found it the way cats find the one warm paving stone on the whole street. Sprawled on the honey-colored planks, tail curled around her like a duvet she grew herself, one sock half off because socks are the first casualty of true comfort. The blush on her cheeks and the tilt of her ears say she heard you come in and has decided, generously, not to move. I relate completely. Some weekends, the entire plan is exactly this: find the warm rectangle of floor, transfer yourself onto it, and become furniture with opinions. The wood around her glows like it's been varnished with the afternoon itself, every plank grain running the same lazy direction as her hair. Her kimono's slipped off one shoulder and she can't be bothered, and honestly, correct. We spend so much of the year being upright and useful. An afternoon spent as a puddle in a sunbeam is not laziness, it's maintenance. The tail knows. The tail has always known.
