Snow is the only ground that keeps a diary. Every fence post writes in it. I crouched over this stretch for ten minutes, reading. The rails lean at tired angles, gray wood gone silver with decades, and the snow has drifted against them in waves — hard on the windward side, soft and swooping where the wind curled around each post. The shadows are the best part, long blue-gray lines raked across the white, so sharp you could trip over them. By afternoon they'd be gone, redrawn an inch to the left. The whole page rewrites itself daily and never complains. There were no tracks at all when I arrived, which felt like being handed the first copy of something. Not even a bird had signed it. I like how a plain fence becomes sculpture in winter — same wood, same nails, but the snow drapes it and the low sun inks it and suddenly a farm boundary is a line drawing in a gallery. I took three photos and left one set of footprints, walking backwards out of the frame so the page stayed as clean as I found it. Some diary entries you don't want to spoil.
