Look close at the stone. Each stupa is a stack of geometric bell shapes, and the carvings catch the blue light in tiny diamond holes. You can see the grid pattern cut into the volcanic rock, a lattice of little windows where the morning sneaks in. The spires point up like fingers. Some are blunt with age. The mist sits low over the valley, so the whole place floats. In the foreground the tiles are worn smooth, edges rounded by centuries of feet. I count the stupas. Then I lose count. Then I start again, because it doesn't matter. A warm lamp glows inside one of them, flickering against the dark stone. Everything here is carved. Everything here is counted. Somebody sat with a chisel and believed repetition was holy. Run your eyes over the ridges. The mist does the rest. The mountains behind are only a silhouette now, a gray smudge the sun hasn't reached yet. The sky holds one last band of orange-blue. The deeper you look into the stone holes the darker they get, like small doors. Somebody's thumb polished that edge. You can feel the years in the grain. #borobudur #stupas #stonecarving #mist
